Homemade Coconut Body Butter

Dear Andestagonwa (Love),

Coconut oil is our home’s go to in the summer. It is light on the skin, so we do not feel all hot and icky in the heat. However, when winter starts peeking around the edges of fall and our skin begins cracking, it is time for something heavier, more nourishing and moisturizing. Homemade, DIY body butter blends are my solution. My favorites include, my Shula Gold recipe with coconut oil and shea butter, and my Beulah’s White Gold with coconut oil and white beeswax.

Once I have my base, I like to incorporate other oil accents like jojoba, almond, and or castor oil. For an antibacterial and anti- dryness component, Tea Tree oil reigns supreme in my medicine woman bag. Not a fan of Tea Tree oil’s overpowering scent, you can substitute Cinnamon Oil for its antiseptic properties. And do not worry, you will not be lacking in the moisture department.

Of course, I would be remiss if I forgot the fragrances. Sandalwood, Cedarwood, and Oak essential oils as accents are a must for me. Rose oil is a new favorite along with Tangerine and Ylang Ylang mixed. Yea, trust, the mental euphoria of the latter two is love. You can even add a bit more sensualism to your romantic endeavors with Tangerine and Ylang Ylang.

Here is where I will leave you to make magic happen. There is really no mixing this much with this many tablespoons and twenty drops of this and that. See, I rarely measure, I simply blend until it looks, smells, feels, and blends the way it should for me. Nevertheless, I will say your Coconut oil and/or Shea Butter should be your star, so do use more than the other components. Your beeswax is the ingredient that makes your butter whip and cream—so the beeswax is about a third of your blend. All that said, trust yourself. Know, you will find your balance of ingredients, that is the heka–magic.

Best of Love,

My Recipe Blend Basics- 3 Main Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 3 Parts Coconut Oil
  • 1 Part White Beeswax Pellets
  • Castor Oil
  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Drops of Sandalwood and Rose Essential Oil to scent preference

Process

Mix in nonstick sauce pan (if available) over low heat until liquid. Pour into heat safe bowl. Allow to cool naturally (if time allots) until partially solid (there will be liquid underneath top layer of cooled oils). Mix, whisk, or whip to desired consistency. For thicker whipped butter, add in small increments of unmelted coconut oil, and mix until desired consistency. For a smoother, silkier blend a more semi-cooled beeswax.
